On the INEDIT project, Uninova is responsible for one case study: “Smartification of Furniture”, meaning the integration of technology hardware in the furniture pieces, either via add-on to existing furniture or within the design and manufacturing processes.

The goal of this smartification is to empower the DIT community, to easily integrate intelligent features in their furniture designs. The “smart devices” can provide awareness of objects or the surrounding environment, in order to offer additional functionalities that enhance the user’s experience and quality of life.

Some examples of the applications of such devices can be:

• Detection of environmental conditions (e.g. humidity, temperature, movement);
• Identification of potentially critical situations (e.g. flooding, fire, earthquake);
• Assistive health triggers/alerts related to the well-being of the user (e.g. fall detection, idleness, restlessness);

By developing a framework that assists the smartification process, the harmonization of the user needs, the manufacture constrains, and the requirements of the devices can be achieved in the unique INEDIT platform.
